Dong-Moon "GoStop" Kim can easily be regarded as one of the legends of the game. From his strong Reign of Chaos (RoC) performances to his Frozen Throne (TFT) dominance GoStop is easily one of the strongest undead players present right now. In the past couple of months as hi ex-team NiP disbanded and decided not to keep a Warcraft 3 squad, he joined the Pro-Starcraft Korean based team eSTRO, Being the only one in their Warcraft 3 division right now GoStop hasn't been seen in action for a long period of time now. Aside from a few appearances in StarsWar IV and some other Korean leagues, his limited access to leagues has put a question mark over his career.

In an exclusive interview, GoStop talks about everything that he possibly can; be it his passion for Christ, his next door neighbour or his famous Fiend strategy... This is GoStop Unplugged!

김동문 "GoStop"은 워크래프트 업계의 전설이다. 오리지날 시절부터 현재 프로즌쓰론에 이르기까지 김동문의 활약은 그를 최강의 언데드라고 부르는 것을 서슴치않게 한다. 그의 예전 팀이었던 NiP이 몇달 전 해체되고 한국의 스타크래프트 팀 eSTRO의 단 한명뿐인 워크 선수로 들어간 후, 스타즈워와 한국의 작은리그에 출전한 것을 제외하면 오랜 기간 그는 세계 워크 무대에 나타나지 않았었다. 그리고 그의 잠적은 GoStop의 강함을 기억하는 사람들에게 궁금함을 안겨 주었었다.

이 독점 인터뷰에서 김동문은 그가 말할 수 있는 모든 것을 이야기했다. 하나님에 대한 믿음에서부터 그의 옆집에 누가 살았는지, 트레이드 마크라고 할 수 있는 핀드 전략 등... 여기 GoStop이 왔다!

Gostop is a korean card game which works on the lines of Poker, I wanted my image to be that which clings to victory like poker players have tons of money you see. So I took the nickname "GoStop"

Gostop은 포커와 같은 한국의 카드 게임이다. 돈을 많이 딴 포커 선수처럼 승리를 갈망하는 이미지를 갖고 싶었다. 그래서 "GoStop"을 아이디로 정했다.

The First Game of GoStop~

It was in 2002, I went to a PC cafe with my friend for playing Warcraft III for the first time. I did not want to use the original Warcraft II races(Humans/Orcs) But that friend of mine who came choose to play Night Elf, so I had to pick Undead.
That means if that guy had picked Undead I would be an Elf player now, by the way interestingly I didn't know much about the Undead when I played it first, so I directly upgraded my Necropolis as the game started without training more acolytes, and moved my ghouls to the gold mine instead of the trees.

2002년에 친구들과 처음으로 워크를 하러 게임방에 갔었다. 워크2에 있던 종족은 하고 싶지 않았고(휴먼과 오크) 친구가 나엘을 골랐기 때문에 나는 언데드를 하게 되었다. 이 말은 그 놈이 언데드를 했으면 지금쯤 나는 나엘을 하고 있었을 거란 얘기다. 어쨌든 그때는 언데드에 대해서 잘 몰라서 시작하자마자 애콜을 뽑지도 않고 홀업을 눌렀고 구울들을 금광에 찍었었다.

I have got the chance to interview GoStop after a very long time now, it was back in WCReplays when I first interviewed him with his 2on2 partner Susiria, back then he was in MYM and he sported long locks which earned him a lot of stares. "I had a long hair style, so some Korean fans used to joke around saying that I would make a good shampoo commercial model" Chuckles Gostop thinking about his hair, "but now as you may know I have normal short hair like boys! Just hope you guys can identify me now", says Gostop after being asked about his infamous old locks.

나는 아주 예전에 GoStop과 인터뷰할 기회가 있었다. 오정기의 2:2 파트너로서 그를 인터뷰했었는데 그때는 MYM의 선수였고 눈에 띄는 긴 머리를 하고 있었다.
"저는 한때 머리가 길었었죠. 그래서 한국의 팬들이 제가 샴푸 모델을 하고 싶어한다고 농담을 하곤 했어요."
김동문은 그 헤어스타일을 생각하며 웃었다.
"하지만 아시다시피 지금은 보통 남자들처럼 머리가 짧아요. 저를 알아보실 수 있었으면 좋겠네요."

With the hair-raising topic out of the way, I asked him about his fascination with gaming and how has it worked for him, "From as long as I can remember I loved playing games. As Starcraft had been famous and to me the word "Pro-Gamer" appealed to me, I mean the thought of working as one interested me." Says GoStop who decided to follow his dreams by playing warcraft 3 and getting competitive as fast as he could as he adds, "I started playing Warcraft 3 and I wish I could do better than everyone else so I gave it my all and I like this game and loving one's work is the best way to live a life, so I decided to be a Pro-Gamer" says GoStop about him getting serious behind gaming.

"아주 어릴 때부터 저는 게임을 좋아했어요. 스타크래프트가 인기를 끌고 '프로게이머'라는 단어가 생겨났을 때, 저는 그것을 직업으로 하고 싶었어요."
워크래프트 3을 함으로써 그의 꿈을 실현한 GoStop의 말이다.
"저는 워크래프트 3을 시작했고 누구보다도 강해지고 싶었어요. 그래서 저는 제 모든 것을 바쳤고 이 게임을 정말 좋아합니다. 좋아하는 일을 하면서 사는건 아주 멋진 인생이죠. 그래서 프로게이머가 되었습니다."

GoStop has been part of a select number of teams but most time he has always stuck with his friends with the only exception being his time at MYM. He has competed in most of the leagues in Korea while they were still open (MBC, OGN, RTB) so in all essence GoStop has seen it all in Korea. "I remember playing with zZoA Fairs with players like Moon, I'd say it was the first time for me to play Warcraft 3 with "my team", Says GoStop about his first team. "That team holds some very good memories for me, I am good friends with Moon even till now! I am sure you don't know but Moon is my neighbour!" Laughs GoStop after mentioning that. Indeed we didn't know about that.

김동문은 팀을 여러번 바꾸었지만 MYM에 있을 때를 제외하곤 언제나 그의 친구들과 함께였다. 그는 한국에서 열리는 리그 대부분에 참가했고 실력을 한국 사람들에게 널리 알릴 수 있었다.
"장재호같은 선수와 함께 ZZOA Fairs에서 게임을 했을 때가 생각나요. 처음으로 '우리 팀'이라는 기분을 느꼈어요. 그 시절은 제게 아주 좋은 기억으로 남아있고 아직까지 장재호와 좋은 친구로 지내고 있어요. 당연히 모르시겠지만 저는 장재호 옆집에 살아요!"
이 이야기를 하고 나서 그는 웃었다. 물론 나는 몰랐다.

GoStop has always teamed up with friends, RainBow, FarSeer, NangChun, Moon have always formed a top team in Korea. Before Moon went solo he was part of THE GREATEST ONE [ONE] in Korea. They had success but it disbanded as well, "Now the team ONE doesn't exist today, and all my ex-team-mates are doing their best in different places. Team ONE was a friendly team with the Korean spirit of gaming." claims GoStop, that makes it even more memorable for him. "We did our best but we couldn't make something happen with our team, we didn't really reach the top and I felt something was missing..." Ponders GoStop.

김동문은 언제나 RainBow, FarSeer, NangChun, Moon과 같은 친구들과 한국 최고의 팀을 이루었다. 장재호가 솔로로 활동하기 전까지 그는 THE GREATEST ONE [ONE]팀의 일원이었다. 그들은 괜찮은 성적을 내긴 했지만 얼마 후 해체되었다.
"ONE 팀은 이제 더이상 존재하진 않지만 제 동료들은 각자 다른 곳에서 최선을 다하고 있어요. ONE 팀은 한국 게이머들에게 친숙한 팀이었어요."
그런 면이 그 팀을 더욱 기억에 남게 하는 것 같다.
"저희는 최선을 다했지만 팀을 위해 아무것도 할 수 없었고 정상을 차지하지도 못했어요. 뭔가 잃어버린 듯한 느낌이었죠..."

Digging a little into the entire NiP scandal in which the management said nothing and the players just left, GoStop felt things weren't bitter, "NiP was satisified with our team result and in my opinion".

NiP이 해체될 때 매니저의 어떤 코멘트도 없이 선수들이 그냥 버려졌던 일에 대해 조금 자세히 묻자 김동문은 별 감정 없이 이야기했다.
"제 생각에 NiP은 저희 팀의 성적에 만족하고 있었던 것 같아요."


6. (d)eSTRO


NiP을 떠나고 난 뒤 김동문은 잠시동안 팀 없이 활동했었다. 몇몇 팀들의 제안을 살펴본 뒤 eSTRO에 들어가기로 결정했고, 지금까지는 만족하고 있는 것 같다.
"저는 모기업의 장기 계획 때문에 eSTRO를 선택했어요. 한국의 eSports는 스타크래프트에 그 기반을 두고 있는데, 우리 팀은 카운터 스트라이크나 워크래프트 3과 같은 다른 장르에도 힘을 쏟고 있어요."

Does that mean we're going to see a full fledged team with maybe even non-korean players in it?"My company will make a Warcraft 3 team, no not always Koreans, foreigners can also join but I am not the boss so I can't say anything right now" Says GoStop about his team that pays him well and keeps him happy as a gamer.

이 말은 우리가 곧 eSTRO의 이름을 단 워크래프트 팀을 볼수 있게 된다는 뜻일까?
"우리 회사는 워크 팀을 만들거에요. 한국 선수들뿐 아니라 외국 선수도 엔트리에 포함될 수 있죠. 그렇지만 제가 책임자가 아니기 때문에 지금 당장은 뭐라고 드릴 말씀이 없네요."

On his idol in real life:

As a normal man, I hope to follow the way of Jesus Christ's life. All Christians may hope to follow this way, I think. But it's very hard to live like him, so sometimes we including myself make several mistakes.

실생활에서의 우상:

보통 사람처럼 저는 예수 그리스도의 삶을 따르고 싶어요. 크리스천들은 다들 이렇게 생각하겠죠. 하지만 그렇게 사는 것은 무지 힘들기 때문에 가끔 실수할 수도 있다고 생각해요.

On his favorite book and magazine:

'Your Best Life Now', written by Joel Austin and I don't like reading magazines.

Small and elegant cars...well actually I don't have much interest in cars, so I don't really think I'll get one actually.

On his hair:

In Korea the adults don't like men with long hair, even though I liked my old style. Moreover my girlfriend likes me having short hair so I cut them. You know, I have to cut my hair when I enter the army anyway.

저는 예전 긴 머리가 좋지만 한국의 어른들은 남자가 머리를 기르는 것을 탐탁치 않아 하세요. 게다가 제 여자친구가 짧은 머리를 좋아하기 때문에 잘랐어요. 뭐 어쨌든 군대갈때는 머리를 잘라야하겠지만요.

On what sports he likes:

Soccer! but I can't play it well.

They didn't like me playing this game, but after I became a pro-gamer they started to courage and advise me. I trust them, and lean on them than anyone else and I love them a lot.

부모님은 제가 게임하는 것을 좋아하지 않으셨어요. 하지만 프로게이머가 되고 난 후에는 저를 격려해주시고 충고해주시죠. 부모님을 믿고 의지합니다. 그리고 아주 많이 사랑해요.

She started coming to my church, and when I saw her I fell in love at first sight. Later I tried to get her phone number and charmed her! *laughs*

여자친구에 대해:

On shopping and malls:

I like these questions, but I have no interest in shopping, I suppose if I was in a mall you'd find me in a clothing shop (thats when am trying to find a gift for others, or in a grocery store for the foods or sometimes in an electric mall checking out the new gadgets!

On his defintion of "Cool":

Cool....well. "Cool" can be something between lovers when they don't bring up past faults of the other person. "Cool" can also be between friends when a friend is being nice and warm to another friend and trying to create a link so he/she can ask me something. "Cool" in communication can be something that follows a particular mood! Not breaking a particular mood, but I guess this is just my guess on what "Cool" is!

Cool하다....음.. "Cool"한 건 연인 사이에 과거를 문제삼지 않는 거죠. 친구 사이에서 "Cool"한건 서로에게 뭔가를 묻고 기댈수 있는 사이가 되는 것이구요. 대화할때 "Cool"한건 무드를 깨지않고 빠져드는 것이 아닐까요?

GoStop is credited with being one of the first users and probably the inventor of the fiends style of play that all undead's have come to use since. So let's go to the master of Fiends about his tips in-game!

Tell us about your strategy in which you used only fiends.

Fiends stratgy is a lot different from the ghoul strats one normally encounters. When I used only fiends, it made me the "fiend master" but I couldn't control other units so well so I lost many times. Now I'm used to controlling ghouls and some undead players are using fiends better than me.

온리핀드체제에 대해 이야기해주세요.

핀드전략은 구울체제와 교전 컨트롤이 아주 다릅니다. 제가 핀드만 썼기 때문에 핀드마스터라고 불리기는 하지만 다른 유닛들을 잘 컨트롤하지 못하기 때문에 많이 졌었습니다. 지금은 저도 구울 컨트롤에 익숙해졌고 저보다 핀드를 잘 쓰는 언데드들이 몇명 생겼죠.


What is your latest strategy versus Night elf?

I tend to follow the opponent Elf throughout the game, so I scout often and if the Elf is trying to upgrade then I use two crypts to put the pressure on him. But if the Elf tries to make a bigger force then I upgrade and get a stronger army as well.

나엘전의 전략은 어떻게 되시나요?

게임 내내 나엘을 따라다니려고 합니다. 그래서 정찰을 자주 보내는 편이고, 홀업중에 투크립트로 압박하는 것을 좋아합니다. 나엘이 병력을 많이 뽑으면 업그레이드를 충실하게 하지요.


In your experience what has been the most unique strategy you've seen ever?

I can't remember the special strats that I've seen being used but I'd think the game versus Sweet in WEG 2005 (Season 3) I almost managed to win the game but I made a mistake and a lot of mistakes followed and I lost, thus giving him the first place.

지금까지 봤던 가장 독특한 전략은 무엇인가요?
특별한 전략을 기억하지는 못하겠어요. 하지만 WEG 2005(시즌 3)에서 천정희와 싸웠을때 거의 다 이긴 게임을 실수로 역전당해 우승을 놓쳤던 게 생각나네요.

How do you handle a human opponent?

I like to pressurize Human opponents, Human is the most terrible race to play against if you let them play their own game.

휴먼전의 전략은 어떤가요?

휴먼을 압박하려고 합니다. 지맘대로 하게 놔두면 제일 힘든 종족이거든요.


What dificulties have you encountered in a mirror match?

Mirror matches are always very delicate and sensitive, a small mistake here and there and you can easily lost the match. Getting back into the game after a huge lapse is also hard. I guess for me it's very hard to keep improving my undead.

동족전에서 뭐가 가장 어려운가요?

데데전은 아주 섬세하고 민감합니다. 작은 실수로 쉽게 져버릴 수 있죠. 큰 실수를 저지르고 난 뒤엔 집중하기가 쉽지 않구요. 언데전 실력을 키우기가 제일 힘든 것 같습니다.


How did you select a strategy against the Orchish Horde?

I believe versus Orc the game is the hardest. Though I lead a game against an Orc they can easily reverse that. Undead needs high level heroes for these Orc vs Undead games. So I always try and create a gap between my hero levels and the Orc's hero levels. You have to realize that when you have to destroy the horde you can only trust your heroes.

오크전의 전략은 어떤가요?

오크와 싸우는 것이 가장 어렵다고 생각합니다. 계속 유리하게 운영해나가다가도 아차하면 뒤집어지니까요. 오크전에선 영웅레벨을 높이는 것이 중요합니다. 슈렉쉐키들을 잡을때는 항상 영웅을 믿어야 합니다.

Now with those things out of the way I decided to take small snippets from his Warcraft 3 life and otherwise:

GoStop recently was in the news for his game against Showbu in the Warcraft 3 World War (WWW) where he sadly lost, despite going in as favorite for the match. He felt a strong factor in his loss may have been practice, "As you know Korean Humans are very strong and not very strong. Moreover in that time ToD could not help me either so I couldn't practice well. Showbu on the other hand practiced with strong players like Lucifer and Susiria... So in a word I suppose practice made the biggest difference at the end of the day" trails GoStop.

김동문은 W3에서 멋진 경기를 했지만 박세룡에게 지고 말았다. 그는 패배의 원인을 연습 부족으로 생각하고 있다.
"아시다시피 한국 휴먼은 강하지만 선수층이 얇습니다. 게다가 토드가 도와주지 않아서 제대로 연습도 할수 없었구요. 반면에 박세룡은 노재욱이나 오정기와 같은 강자들과 연습할 수 있었구요... 한마디로 연습량이 가장 큰 차이였던 것 같습니다."

When MYM announced that Koreans would be joining them in Season 6, no one could have possibly fathomed what a devastating 2on2 they would go on to form, and also being unstoppable the whole season. After that GoStop pretty much became a regular feature in WC3L and it wasn't until NiP disbanded that he was not to be seen. But aside from that the lack of exposure to European gamers also means it's harder to find a game, "My team eSTRO is trying to make a team to participate in WC3L, but most of the Korean players have already a home. Besides eSTRO is busy for other things for now", Says GoStop. He claims he'd love to be a part of the NGL and WC3L but is sad that he can't find a spot, "I want to play in WC3L and NGL, but it's sad to say that I can't. I hope that soon we will make a new team that can show the fans out there some nice games! so stay tuned guys!" Exclaims GoStop with hope about his warcraft 3 team.

MYM이 시즌 6에 한국인들을 영입했을 때 그렇게 무시무시한 2대2 멤버가 구성될 거라고 생각한 사람은 아무도 없었고 MYM은 시즌 내내 무적의 강함을 과시했다. 그 뒤 WC3L의 정규출전 선수였던 김동문이 NiP가 해체된 뒤 보이지 않게 되었다. 유럽 게이머들은 그의 경기를 볼 수가 없었다.
"eSTRO는 WC3L에 참가하기 위해 팀을 만드려고 노력했지만 대부분의 한국 선수들은 어딘가에 소속되어 있었어요. 게다가 eSTRO는 다른 일 때문에 바쁘구요."
그는 NGL과 WC3L에 참가하고 싶었지만 슬프게도 자리를 찾을 수가 없었다.
"저는 WC3L과 NGL에 참가하고 싶어요. 하지만 그럴수가 없었죠. 빨리 새 팀을 만들어 팬들에게 멋진 게임을 보여주고 싶어요. 기다려주세요!"

Many Koreans have found a way of earning more money by shifting to China and playing there. GoStop has joined a Korean team but would his wish also be to go to China? "I wish I could, and my team is considering if I could move there and perhaps participate in Chinese leagues as well." says GoStop.

Speaking of the scene in China, Warcraft 3 has also started picking up recently with tournaments sprouting up every now and then. some believe that it is because of the rise of Warcraft 3 in countries like China and in Europe. GoStop says, "The e-sports market of China and Europe is growing everyday, and very fast when it comes to games like Warcraft 3 and maybe Korean league admins wanted to start something of their own again". Could this be a sign of things to come? The re-birth of Warcraft 3 in Korea? GoStop is quick to caution though, "I think this is a very positive sign for us but it will not grow enough for us Warcraft 3 players here."

Maybe in the army? Or after the army I suppose, I'll probably be practicing something that is related to my work, perhaps.

No, not really, I think I'm to late to study something else at this juncture, I just hope to do something related to e-sports.
