Professional gamers play for passion, but they need money to wear a tag before their name. This article takes a look at the recent player movement in the Warcraft III scene.

Everyone was at a standstill when the news broke: World Elite’s Korean contingent was leaving the clan. After the initial surprise of ReMinD, SoJu and Lyn subsided, speculation quickly turned to where the three players would end up. Assumptions shuffled around teams such as Beijing Esport Team, eSTRO and SK Gaming.

A few days later, the latter announced that they had recruited ReMinD and Lyn, significantly boosting a ramshackle roster that had lost two of its top players.

SoJu (still without a team) and ReMinD joined World Elite early after its inception, having built their dominant reputations on the Kalimdor ladder as members of Clan Phoenix. Lyn joined the team a year later, recruited after steady wins at the weekly InCup tournaments.

The reason for the Koreans’ departure was quite clear— salary, specifically the lack of it. The organization behind World Elite, despite fostering a flourishing website and exuding an aura of prominence (the team has been one of the most successful clans in both WCGL and NGL play), still remains a Chinese-based corporation, where the cost of living is significantly lower than in South Korea and Europe, leaving World Elite struggling to meet the inflated (by Chinese standards) lifestyle of its Korean players.
한국인의 이탈의 이유는 특별하게 봉급의 부족으로써 꾀 명백했다. 플러쉬 웹사이트를 조성하고 탁월한 오라(팀은 WC3L과 NGL경기에서 가장 성공적인 클랜중 하나였다.)를 발산했음에도 불구하고 World Elite아래 조직은 여전히 (중국기준으로써)폭등한것에 대처해 발버둥이 치며 떠난 남한과 유럽에서보다 두드러지게 낮은 중국에 기초를둔 단체로 남아있다.
A war of words then broke out between SoJu and World Elite owner, Zax Chou. During the dispute—which was broadcast on various WC3 community sites-- conflicting salary numbers were bandied about. One interesting factor raised by Chou was the newly minted contracts the Danish-based Meet Your Makers clan had drawn up for its Korean squad headed by Moon, Lucifer and Susiria.
말전쟁은 그때 SoJu와 World Elite 소유자 Zax Chou사이에서 일어났다. 여러 WC3 커뮤니티 사이트에서 퍼트리면서 논쟁동안 모순되는 봉급의수들은 토론되었다. Chou에의해서 일어난 하나의 재미있는 요소는 덴마크에 기반을둔 MYM클랜이 Moon,Lucifer와 Susiria에의해 이끌어지는 한국팀에대해 끌어올리는 새로운 거대한 계약이였다.

MYM reportedly paid their Warcraft III players an exorbitant amount of money upon their contract renewal early this year, making them among the best paid Warcraft III players in the world. MYM had upped the ante significantly when the rumor mill went into overdrive about Moon and co. supposedly being wooed by another team. If so, MYM, as one of the elite WC3 clans, did the logical thing and slapped a number so high, it put it out of reach of potential competitors.
This radically raised the salary bar, primarily for South Koreans, where pro-gaming is viewed as a legitimate livelihood. It was one of the main reasons for the dissatisfaction harbored by Chou’s players upon learning how much their “peers” at MYM were earning.

SK Gaming, a European e-sport entity with money to burn, quickly pounced on Lyn and ReMinD to pump new blood into their ailing roster. This marked the return of Koreans to the German-based clan, which had earlier lost Sweet and Zacard to BeT.
돈을 태우는 유럽 이스포츠 실체 SK Gaming은 신속히 그들의 동맹 로스터안으로 새 피를 퍼부어서 Lyn과 ReMinD에게 덥쳤다. 이는 BeT에게 Sweet와 Zacard를 쉽게 잃었던 독일에기반을둔 클랜으로 한국인들의 복귀를 상징한다.
Originally, Sweet and Zacard stayed with BeT, as part of a reciprocal partnership with SK Gaming but at the turn of the New Year, SK announced that it was dissolving the partnership and ultimately both players decided to remain with BeT exclusively.
원래 Sweet와 Zacard는 SK Gaming과 함께 상호제휴의 부분으로써 BeT과 함께 머물렀었다. 하지만 새해의 전환에서 Sk는 협력을 해제할것이라는것을 발표했고 최후로 두 선수들은 독점적으로 BeT과 함께 남을것을 결심했다.

BeT, which is a Korean organization routed through Beijing, has itself quickly become a major player in the WC3 scene by acquiring more Korean players en route to qualifying for the 12th Season of the WC3L , It was evident that BeT had deep pockets, judging by the players they were able to recruit, namely Ju Lee “Check” Hyung and Dae Hui “FoV” Cho, elbowing out other clans who tried to sign the Undead star upon his departure from wNv.

The increased salaries of MYM’s (and maybe even BeT’s) Koreans never affected other clans’ operations directly, but, like the World Elite players, gave them a sounding board to discuss and compare salaries, which may have sowed the seeds of dissent.

At the end of the day, we can’t blame teams like MYM, BeT or SK for picking up the best players money can buy, just as we can’t blame big market sports teams like the New York Yankees or Manchester United for using the free market system to their advantage. After all, they work hard to get sponsorships and endorsements to be able to run their team at such a high level. Meet Your Makers has been criticized for loosely using its money as a cynical lure but—really—what organization with the proper resources wouldn’t do everything it could to keep their players on their team? They certainly shouldn’t be vilified for that.

In the same regard, we can’t blame players for desiring better pay, pay that many of them work hard for to increase their worth to their team and literally pay the bills.

For WE’s part, the one player they cannot lose is homegrown sensation Li “Sky” Xiaofeng. Sky singlehandedly emanates the sterling reputation World Elite has cultivated the past two years—that the best Chinese players are or deserve to be members of World Elite. Sky has been with the team from birth, seemingly immune to mutinous rumors of jumping ship.

There is certainly no lack of teams eager to house the two-time WCG champion. The question is, has anyone tested Sky’s loyalty with a financial offer superior to his current one; and if ever, would it be enough to entice the WE mainstay to leave the clan he has helped build and, in the process, become the face of?
2번 WCG 챔피언을 간수하고싶어하는데 팀의 부족은 없었다. 의문은 그의 현제 하나로 우수한 제정적인 지원과 함게 어떤이가 Sky의 충성를 실험했는가? 이고 금시초문이지만 그가 도와 세웠던 clan을 떠나는것이 WE의 대들보를 유혹하기에 충분할것인가?
World Elite continues to stand firm with its cornerstone Sky despite losing its Koreans. They counteracted by adding Chinese players (mostly from WE.08) to their roster in order for them to compete in bigger leagues. Ironically, this was the same strategy SK Gaming, the team that acquired WE’s Koreans, applied during the last WC3L season, when, by many accounts, they did the “right” thing by elevating their dedicated SK Germany squad, after losing Sweet and Zacard, to add to their remaining three-man team of Insomnia, HoT and Deadman. This created a strong sense of unity and cohesion within the team, for such a proud clan like SK to trust its less established players to banner their squad.

Many mocked the decision of SK to integrate its German squad at that time, calling it a downgrade from its illustrious parade of stars past, but SK’s newly christened squad actually performed better than the roster of Sweet and Zacard.
지난 스타들의 저명한 행렬로부터 내리막길로 불리우면서 많은 이들이 저때에 독일팀를 통합하기위해 SK의 결정을 비웃었다.하지만 SK의 새 이름을붙인팀이 실제 Sweet와 Zacard의 로스터보다더 성적을 냈었다.

But after the infamous benching of Deadman and the departure of Fisch and fire_de, the team was again left with a crippled roster, inciting a fresh volley of criticism from fans and critics alike. Suddenly, with the addition of ReMinD and Lyn, SK Gaming has transformed itself from “dying team” to “world-class” once again. In this sense, perhaps the Koreans are worth their money, not only for collecting match points but for building the morale of fans and taming the fickle admiration of the Warcraft III community once more.
하지만 팬과 비평가들도 마찬가지로 비판의 상쾌한 일제사격 일으키면서 Deadman의 수치스런 벤치행Fisch와 fire_de의 이탈후 팀은 다시 무능력한 로스터와함께 떨어졌다. 갑자기 ReMinD와 Lyn의 추가와 함께 SKGaming은 "죽어가는팀"에서부터 "세계수준"으로 다시한번 변신되었다. 경기점수를 모우는것뿐만 아니라 팬들의 사기를 세우고 한번터 워크래프트 III 커뮤니티의 위해아마도 이 무대에서 변하기쉬운 감탄를 길들이는것도하는 한국인들은 아마 그들의 돈의 가치가있다.
Loyalty can be maintained to an extent, but seldom can it last in a world where progress is fueled and measured by wins, losses and dollars. People often say, why settle for less when you can have so much more? It’s a paradigm that applies to all the teams mentioned here, and to the players themselves. ReMinD, Lyn and SoJu know their worth, and it’s more than WE can or was willing to give them.
충성은 한도네에서 유지할수있지만 드물게 진보가 승,패와 돈의로써 돋우어지고 박자가 맞아지는 세계에서 마지막으로 그것을 할수있다.
Only time will tell if this was the right decision. World Elite might have lost three of its best players, but don’t count them out just yet. In a way, World Elite might be doing its country a great service by letting its secondary team play in the main WE squad, just as SK did. Who knows? The new Elites—KeDa, DuCui and Infi-- (even if plagued by bad internet connections) might become China’s new heroes.
오직 시간은 이것이 바른 결정인지 말해줄것이다. World Elite는 최고의 선수 3을 잃은지도 모른다. 하지만 아직 그들은 카운트하지안았다. 한 방법에서 World Elite는 SK가 헀듯이 메인 WE팀에 경기하는 2류의팀으로써 대단한 수고를 국가를위해 할지도 모른다. 누가 아는가? 새 Elites (나쁜 인터넷 접속에의해 괴로웠었던) KeDa,DuCui와 infi-는 중국의 새 영웅이 될지도 모른다.
